The Delft Incident

This is comment on the posts by L. Jayasooriya (LJ) and Jaliya Wickremarachchi of CSLAT given below.

When it comes to military statements from either side truth is often the first casualty. What we can be certain about the Delft incident is that an LTTE attack on the high seas took place. That the LTTE can mount such a naval attack when they were supposed to be on their last legs is itself a condemnation of the military posture of GOSL when by normal standards they should be infinitely superior to a terrorist gang financed by Tamil expatriates and ostracized by much of the world.

LJ seems to be surprised that GOSL is bending backwards to please the IC. If he has followed many of my previous posts he would have known that GOSL is not in the business of "finishing off" the LTTE. In fact this is clearly stated in the Mahinda Chintanaya where the military solution is rejected in favour of negotiation. Negotiation will never finish off the LTTE.

LJ seems to think that we should beg for assistance from China like Mrs B. Perhaps this begging has already been done and China had rejected it behind the scenes. The jumbo delegation to China returned with empty hands. If we compare GOSL with the LTTE there is absolutely no reason why GOSL should come second best. They have more manpower, more money, more legitimacy, and all the other advantages in military conflict, yet they are unable to resist what is plainly a small terrorist gang with much less in any of the requisites of warfare (except suicide cadres) than them.

Where GOSL fails is in the corruption and incompetence of the Government, the Administration, the diplomats and even the Military. But these are things that only they can remedy, not China or any other power. The MahindaR regime seems to be deficient on all these, even compared to previous regimes, judged by things like the jumbo Cabinet, jumbo delegations, inability to articulate a political solution, military stalemate, inability to even ban the LTTE or annul the CFA, search for foreign mediators, etc.

Jaliya seems to share LJ's pessimism. He seems to be surprised why GOSL has not been able to respond adequately to the LTTE air attacks. Now GOSL naval forces have been shown to be not able to chase the LTTE boats to their base and destroy them there. He would have understood these if he too had read my posts in this forum instead of having blind faith in the MahindaR administration. What I have been doing is to make not only a critical assessment of GOSL failures but also to find out the root cause why the Sinhelas do not seem to be capable of facing up to the LTTE.

The following are some specific comments on Jaliya's post:

The fundamental fallacy of Jaliya, CSLAT and the other 'patriots' is the failure to realize that the continuance of SL separatist problem is the failure of Sri Lankans alone, and that the solution to the problem lies in SL and not elsewhere.

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE GOSL HAS COME TO A GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT WITH OUR
ENEMY THE "INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY" AS DEFINED BY OUR TRAITORS ONLY TO
RETALIATE AND NOT FINISH OFF THE LTTE. IN FACT THEY HAVE SHAMELESSLY SAID
SO.

IT IS IN MOMENTS LIKE THIS THAT I THINK OF TRUE NATIONAL PATRIOTS LIKE
MRS. B WHO TOLD THEM WHERE TO GET OFF AND SURVIVED ON BARTER DEALS WITH
CHINA. TODAY IF IT COMES TO THAT IT WILL NOT BE AS GRIM AS IT WAS THEN.
BESIDES CHINA IS NOW A SUPER POWER. WE ALSO HAVE OTHER FRIENDS.

ALL PATRIOTS ARE NOW BEGINNING TO WONDER WHY THE LTTE HAS SO FAR NOT BEEN
DESTROYED. THIS HAS TO BE CONVEYED TO THE GOSL.

Who is telling the truth..?

We seem to be having a hard time getting the real truth on what is happening in Sri Lanka. Take the following two reports on latest fighting at Delft Islet - Jaffna. (please see the articles below). The Ministry of Defence says it has successfully defended the attack by the LTTE, killing 18 of the Tigers. On the other hand, the Tamilnet, the LTTE mouth piece says they successfully attacked a Sri Lankan Navy Base and returned with a huge cache of weapons from the Navy. According to the Tiger propaganda, they only lost 4 of their fighters. The question is who is telling the real truth..?

We certainly understand why the LTTE is using this type of propaganda to increase their support among the Tamil Diaspora, who is financing the bulk of the LTTE war machine. What is hard to understand is what advantage GOSL going to gain by hiding the real facts...? Perhaps, they may not want to demoralize the Armed Forces. Then again, they have been fighting this war for the last 25 years, and surely the forces understand the nature of fighting a war.

Like many Sri Lankans, I am beginning to worry about the military strategies of the Sri Lankan government. We felt jubilant when our Armed Forces started flushing out the LTTE terrorists in the eastern region (Trinco, Batticolo, Sampur, etc.). We all hoped (and still do..), that it was the beginning of the end to the Tiger terrorism. However, lately our Armed Forces seem to be in "wait and see mode", responding only to the attacks by the LTTE, rather than carrying on the offensive, which they have successfully completed in the East.

As a Sri Lankan, who believes strongly that military action is the only way (before any political solution..), to eliminate the terrorism by the LTTE, I am beginning to wonder why GOSL is hesitating, while the LTTE is on the offensive again?

One does not have to be a military expert to realize that the military strategists of the GOSL and the Armed Forces seem some what confused after Tiger air attacks of Katunayake Air Base, and the Kolonnawa oil storage facilities. Unfortunately, the recent responses by the Armed Forces to the LTTE air attacks, certainly do not indicate the Armed Forces are in full control of the situation. Consider the following.

  1. There seem to be no urgent actions or efforts by the GOSL or the Army to eliminate the LTTE air power, which in my opinion, is the biggest threat to peace and economy of Sri Lanka, as tourism and commerce is drastically affected by the terrorist air attacks.
  2. After years of fighting and knowing the build-up of the Tiger air power, the Armed Forces are still seem unable to locate or destroy the air strips, or the planes of the Tigers..? What troubling us most is the fact that the LTTE's capability to carry out such daring air attacks from a tiny area they control in the North, without the full knowledge of Sri Lankan forces. Certainly, it is a massive embarrassment to the Armed Forces and to the GOSL, which for some reason continue to underestimates the capabilities of the enemy. In my opinion it is a tremendous mistake to underestimate an enemy such as the LTTE.
  3. It is hard to understand why our forces have not yet attacked and destroyed LTTE headquarters in Wanni, especially after the air attacks by the LTTE? As a sovereign and an independent nation, Sri Lanka has every right to defend itself, by attacking and destroying its enemy, especially after its strategic points like the Air Force base/ Airport, and oil tanks have been attacked by the LTTE .
  4. No government in the world will tolerate, or allow repeated air attacks by a terrorists group. Certainly not after three attacks, without inflicting severe damages to the air capabilities of the enemy.
  5. No self-respecting government will worry about the international opinion, when its strategic areas, which is key to the security and the economy of the entire country are being targeted and threatened by the terrorists.
  6. It is indeed a disgrace and a shame that a battle hardened, well-equipped SLAF is unable to detect or destroy two-seater, rag tag planes equipped with home made bombs by the terrorists. The worst part is when the enemy proudly display the pictures of their daring air attacks on their pro-web sites, scoring a huge propaganda victory for them.
  7. As the LTTE attacks are on the increase, the government seems only responding to the attacks, rather than pre-emptive attacks. Why not go for the big kill by attacking Wanni head quarters, which considered to be the nerve center of the of the LTTE, rather than waiting for the enemy to come to them..? In any war, the force that takes the lead and go on the offensive seem to have the advantage over the force that follows and go on the defensive.
  8. What is holding GOSL/ Armed Forces from mounting an all out attack in the heart of the LTTE in Wanni? Is it a logistic problem, civilian casualty problem, or is it a political problem? Or, is it because the parties involved do not want to see an end to this conflict, as it has become such a lucrative business for the politicians, terrorists, and the arm dealers alike..? Unfortunately, no body seems to know why..?

I certainly hope the present government, unlike the previous governments, will not become a victim of the international pressure (by donor countries) to stop the military action, and engage in talks again. Talks will only help the LTTE to strengthen itself militarily. It will certainly be a disaster for the country, as any talks with the LTTE will eventually lead to the partitioning of the country, with the help of the International do-gooders.

It remains to be seen, if the present government of President Rajapakse will eventually follow the same path as his two predecessors, Chandrika and Ranil, by selling out the sovereignty of the nation to the International forces, for the sake of mis-guided notion of peace and prosperity. Once the country is partitioned, there will never be peace or prosperity for any group, except for the war-lords who control the regions. We only have to look at the recent history of the Middle East, Balkans, and Africa to witness how these Western-based international forces have created mayhem, and conflicts in epic proportions, by dividing countries along the ethnic and racial lines.

It is indeed a great tragedy, if the present leadership of Sri Lanka will follow such a disastrous strategy by bowing down to the political and international pressure of the donor countries, whose hidden agenda is to de-stabilize the whole region of emerging economic powers of Asia (China, India, etc), in order to maintain their influence in the region.

Some may discard this theory as a paranoia, yet if history is an any indication, the West has always feared the rise of Asia, especially China and India, and they will go to any length to maintain the global power, even if they have to support to establish a pariah state like Eelam in a tiny island of Sri Lanka. Because, they know very well that such Fascist state will be a great threat to India and its neighbors, and eventually it will help Tamil Nadu to separate from India, creating the end of present confederation of India, as we know today.

This is exactly why Sri Lanka must resists the relentless pressure from the West to negotiate with Tamil Tigers, whose only goal is to establish a Fascist and Racist state of Eelam, which needless to say, will be a disaster not only for Sri Lanka, but for the whole region. Lets hope our present leaders have the brain capacity to foresee the future and act accordingly to avoid a great disaster just waiting to happen.
